Object Falls from the Sky in Utah

Last night, around 10:50 PM on February 28, 2025, while I was driving through Brighton Canyon in Salt Lake City, I noticed a bright white light hovering in the sky. It was noticeably larger and more brilliant than the surrounding stars. Just a few seconds after I spotted it, the object suddenly plummeted toward the earth.

I’ve been trying to figure out what it could have been, but I’m stumped. At first, I thought it might have been a drone, but it was flying at the height of an airplane and looked quite large. The speed and angle at which it fell make that seem unlikely. It felt so real that I immediately started searching online to see if there had been a plane crash.

I considered the possibility of a meteor, but it seemed strange that the light just hung there in the sky before falling. It appeared to drop deep into the mountains near Brighton Ski Resort. If anyone has more insight or ideas about what I witnessed, I would greatly appreciate your thoughts!

  1. That sounds like quite an experience! What you described could indeed involve various phenomena. Given the bright white light you observed, it’s possible it could have been a meteor or a piece of space debris re-entering the atmosphere. Sometimes, meteors can appear to hover or change speed due to atmospheric conditions or perspective, which might explain the initial stationary appearance before it fell.

However, if it seemed significantly larger than typical meteors and was moving at a slower speed initially, there’s also a possibility that it could have been a drone or some form of aircraft malfunctioning, although you noted that it was at a considerable altitude.

Another angle to consider is the possibility of an atmospheric anomaly, like a bright aurora or ball lightning, although these are relatively rare. It would be interesting to know if there were any other witnesses in the area or if other people reported similar sightings. Sometimes local news outlets will follow up on such observations, especially if they were in a populated area. Have you considered checking with local authorities or online platforms where others might have shared sightings? That could provide additional context or insights.
