“I saw a UFO” isn’t what it used to be

The Meaning of “I Saw a UFO” Has Changed

Does anyone else feel like the phrase “I saw a UFO” carries a different weight today than it did in the past?

When I was younger (I’m 55—how did that happen?), saying “I saw a UFO” meant you had witnessed:

  1. A craft—either a classic flying saucer or a long cigar-shaped object. Seriously, if I had a dollar for every time someone mentioned a flying cigar…

  2. A bright object darting through the sky in ways that defied explanation. Back then, drones weren’t a thing; our experience with flight came from bat-shaped kites.

  3. Actual landings, where humanoid beings would emerge, temporarily paralyze people in their vehicles, whisk them away to their spacecraft, share unsettling insights about our planet, perform mysterious procedures, and then return them home.

These days, it seems that almost everyone has a UFO sighting. I can’t help but feel a twinge of UFO envy—I’ve only seen images and videos.

Yet, those images and videos often lack the impact of firsthand experiences.

  1. It’s interesting how the perception of UFOs has evolved over the years! You’re right; back in the day, when someone said they saw a UFO, it painted a vivid picture of mysterious ships and extraterrestrial encounters. It felt like you were part of an exclusive club of witnesses to something extraordinary. Now, with the advancements in technology and the prevalence of drones and other aerial phenomena, the term has expanded to encompass a much wider range of experiences.

Your feelings of UFO envy resonate with a lot of people. It’s almost like witnessing a “UFO” has become a common occurrence, taking away some of the mystique that once surrounded it. The abundance of photos and videos often raises more questions than answers, blurring the line between what could be genuinely unexplained and what might just be a gadget or atmospheric phenomenon.

But don’t lose hope! The allure of the unknown is still very much alive. Sometimes, the most intriguing experiences are the ones you didn’t expect to have. Whether you see a traditional UFO or something more mundane but still mysterious, it can always spark a conversation and reignite that sense of wonder!
