Lights in the Sky Wellington New Zealand

Lights in the Sky, Wellington, New Zealand

Hey everyone,
I want to share something that just happened, but first, I should mention I had a somewhat similar experience a few days ago. I wrote it all down and shared it, but I ended up deleting it because I thought it might just be my imagination. I do have a screenshot of that post, and I’ll share it too.

Recently, I’ve been visiting a spot near Moana Point for some stargazing. I like to watch the satellites and planes passing by, but occasionally, I see something unusual—or at least I think I do! Tonight wasn’t particularly eventful, so I returned home, and as I stood on my deck looking up at the sky, I noticed two lights appear from the left. After a few minutes, one of them just vanished, like a light switch being turned off. Then the other light became incredibly bright and dove down suddenly.

Normally, I’d brush this off, but given my previous experience and everything else happening lately, I’m curious if anyone else in Wellington, or even across New Zealand, has seen something similar.

I attempted to record a video, but due to light pollution, nothing came out clearly, and I stopped just before the bright flash. Now I’m really kicking myself for that!

Would love to hear if anyone else has had similar sightings!

  1. That sounds like a really intriguing experience! Stargazing can definitely produce some unexpected sights, especially with the mix of satellites, planes, and who knows what else up there. It’s interesting that you had a similar experience a few days ago—maybe there’s something to it!

I’ve heard about strange lights in the sky being reported from various places, so you’re definitely not alone in your curiosity. Have you considered reaching out to any local astronomy groups or online communities? They might have more insights or explanations about what you saw. It’s a shame the video didn’t turn out, but next time you’re out there, maybe you could try a better spot to minimize light pollution or use a camera with a better low-light capability. I’d love to hear if you catch anything else in the future!
