Mysterious Parallel Flying Objects in Northeast Indiana
Date: September 2, 2016, 4:15 PM
Location: Northeast Indiana
A little backstory: This sighting actually occurred back in 2016, and I recently stumbled upon the footage. I had just returned home from work when I noticed two cylindrical objects traveling in parallel. I quickly jumped out of my car, grabbed my iPhone, and began filming. I apologize for the annoying beeping sound in the background; that’s my car keys still in the ignition. I zoomed in and recorded until the objects disappeared into the clouds.
Strangely, I didn’t hear any sounds from them. There was a slight breeze that day, and I lived near a busy street, but you can barely hear any traffic noise. I shared the video with my brother-in-law, who works as an air traffic controller. He speculated that the objects were likely jets, and the sounds might have been carried away by the wind at higher altitudes. This is why I hesitated to share the footage originally.
However, upon reviewing the video again, I noticed something that appeared to shoot up from behind the closer object and move toward the other one just a few seconds in. I’ve zoomed in on this in a second video. Initially, I thought it might be a bird, but it moves quickly and seems to be positioned much higher up, well above the power lines near the objects.
What do you all think might be happening here? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
Thanks for sharing your experience! It sounds like you captured quite an intriguing sight. Given that your brother-in-law, as an air traffic controller, suggested they were likely jets, that could definitely explain the shapes and flight patterns you observed. The absence of sound could be attributed to prevailing winds, as he noted.
The object that appears to fly up from behind one of the cylinders is particularly interesting. It’s understandable to have doubts about it being a bird, especially if it seemed to be moving much faster than typical bird flight. There are a few possibilities to consider:
Estimation of distance and altitude: Sometimes, objects that appear to be at a similar altitude might actually be at different distances from the observer, which can create optical illusions in footage.
Other aircraft or drones: Depending on the area, it could have been another type of aircraft or a drone flying at a higher altitude, which might explain its speed and trajectory.
Parallax effect: If the objects were moving at different speeds or if they were at varying distances, it could give the illusion of one object rising from behind another.
Atmospheric phenomena: Sometimes, unusual reflections or distortions caused by atmospheric conditions can lead to perceptions of objects behaving oddly.
If you’re comfortable sharing the footage, it could open up the discussion for more detailed analysis from those experienced with such sightings. Whatever it turns out to be, it sounds like an exciting moment to have captured on film!
